Abstract:
With the advent of USB Type-C and Power Delivery (PD) technology, the consumer electronic market is shifting towards the adoption of USB PD for powering gadgets and for charging the batteries. The trend has further increased recently with the European Union (EU) Common Charger Direction in 2024 which mandates that all new smartphones, tablets and other portable electronics sold in EU must be equipped with a USB Type-C port for charging [1]. This shift means that traditional battery powered applications such as Light Electric Vehicles, power tools, light home appliances are also moving to USB Type-C for battery charging. The solution discussed in this paper is SOC which provides a single-chip solution to enable 240 W USB PD contract, battery charging, and 3P BLDC motor control solution with use of high efficiency GaN FETs.
