A novel Optocoupler Technology for Gbit/s Data Rates and high Isolation Voltages in the kV-Range

Abstract:
Optocouplers are electro-optical components used for data transmission and electrical isolation. During the last years, the demands on optocouplers for high data rates and high isolation voltages have increased significantly. However, the exist-ing technologies are limited for both of these properties. This work introduces the new “GigaCoupler” concept, which is based on short-range optical wireless communications. We demonstrate a data rate of 1.25 Gbps combined with a remarkably high isolation voltage and very small footprint.
