Grid operators must have efficient facilities, sufficiently qualified personnel, well-functioning quality assurance measures, and an organization that ensures safe, reliable, environmentally compatible and efficient operations. Certain events may have a positive or negative impact on these objectives and present a risk. This VDE application guide enables grid operators to implement process-oriented risk management and to deal with risks appropriately. Risk management requires an interdisciplinary team with adequate knowledge of grid operation and in the application of risk management procedures. The associated phase model describes a risk management process that is implemented iteratively in practice and comprises the steps of ISO 31000. Risk management is one of the tools of proper corporate governance. By applying the described procedures, potential hazards can be identified and analyzed at an early stage. The necessary measures to minimize risks can then be developed and their effectiveness reviewed. With regard to cross-connected companies, there is close interlocking with the existing regulations in the gas and water sectors.
