This document describes various options for deactivating lithium-ion cells, modules, and batteries, in particular the requirements for the discharge process of electrochemical energy storage devices. The purpose of this is to bring cells, modules, or batteries into a state in which they no longer possess any relevant energy that can be converted into electrical energy. Furthermore, the specific requirements are described to ensure that the cells, modules, or batteries no longer pose any specific electrical hazard. This document is primarily intended for lithium-ion technology, but its application to other technologies is not excluded. This document provides assistance in implementing the basic rules of electrical safety (e.g., 5 safety rules according to EN 50110-1 VDE 0105-100 Section 6.2) and, when applied correctly, can reduce the effects of electrical hazards. This document does not cover other battery-specific hazards such as: - Fire and explosion - Hazardous substances (e.g., gaseous, liquid, dusty, fibrous) - Effects of components containing explosive substances (e.g., “pyroswitch”).
