Telemedicine is a sub-discipline of health care and refers to diagnosis and/or therapy by bridging a distance in time or space between doctor and patient or between two doctors communicating with each other via telecommunication. Telemonitoring is a part of telemedicine besides teleradiology. The purpose of Telemonitoring is to provide optimum treatment for the patient at any time and yet minimize health care costs, for example by replacing the number of stays in hospital for inpatient treatment and monitoring with Telemonitoring systems. Special requirements apply for telemedical appliances due to their transportability, ease of operation, special energy supply and long-term stability in order that patients may handle appliances easily without being restricted in their mobility.
