The nonlinear satellite channel represents an interesting environment in which to optimize the performance for the transmission of coded 16QAM. In this paper, we investigate the adverse effects of the nonlinear satellite channel, which gives insight into the process for optimizing performance. A packet based data predistortion technique is proposed in conjunction with a non-uniform input distribution in order to maximize the capacity of the received signal whilst minimizing the nonlinear distortion components present in a nonlinear channel. We propose a technique with a non-uniform 16QAM modulation using a parallel concatenated turbo coded system with iterative demapping and decoding. Recent work in the literature has examined 4-12APSK structures for 16QAM transmission, where this paper presents the performance for the classical square QAM constellation.
