Bi- and multistatic SAR missions require the coordinated action of several airplanes and/or satellites equipped with emitters, antennas and different kinds of sensors for positioning and navigation. This makes mission planning a substantially more difficult problem than in the monostatic situation. Aiming at a high information gain simulation tools are needed to support the development of mission control strategies. Simulation based optimization is a powerful tool to support this process and to partially automate tedious trial and error strategies. However, the definition of optimization goals, design variables and technical constraints is not trivial and requires careful considerations. The present paper discusses the application of simulation based optimization to SAR mission planning and illustrates these concepts with the example of optimal antenna steering.
