Estimating the speed of a point target in SAR images using time-frequency (TF) techniques has received a good deal of attention in the recent literature. A harder problem is to estimate the motion of a distributed target, because the time frequency representation (TFR) of such targets has greater variance in time and frequency. An even harder problem is estimating the speed of a river, since the target is both distributed, constantly changing and has low signal returns. Possible approaches to estimating river speeds are outlined and some initial results are presented utilizing sea channel flows.
