The European X-Ray Free Electron Laser XFEL currently under construction at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, is based on a linear accelerator with superconducting cavities. The electron beam is accelerated by 800 superconducting cavities up to 17.5GeV. After reaching the final energy the beam passes the magnetic field of undulator magnets whereby the electron beam energy is converted into laser light of unprecedented brilliance, average brilliance, coherence, pulse duration and time structure. A number of RF stations is used to generate high power RF in order to excite the superconducting cavities and accelerate the electron beam by the RF fields in the cavities. This paper gives an introduction to the project and reviews at a glance the RF system required to generate the high power RF for the superconducting cavities.
