Industrial drives, similar to other power electronics applications are experiencing an ever increasing demand for high power densities. Current construction technology and design methods have reached limits that can only be surpassed by changing the way we design and build converters. Only through a system integration approach which involves integration technologies and an integrated thermal and spatial design can this goal be achieved. This approach is presented in the paper and applied to a case study of a 2.2kW inverter for an ac drive. Hybrid integration in the form of integrated power electronics modules (IPEMs) where the circuit is partitioned on the basis of heat density, voltage/current levels etc. and each partition is implemented in suitable integration technologies making an IPEM is one of the key elements of this approach. The IPEMs containing power semiconductors and low power electronics, Ceramic IPEM and PCB IPEM respectively make use of state-of-the-art technologies while the 3D passive IPEM needs new integration technologies for passives. In this paper, the system integration of the case study converter is presented. The resulting system has a volume of 573.5cm3 which given the power level of 2.2kW gives a power density of 3.8 kW/l which is almost four times the power density of the commercially available drives.
