Fixed access networks are historically grown networks originally intended for delivering analogue services such as telephony or broadcast television, which have been used in parallel for broadband data transmission. Due to increasing access bit rate demands the use of optical fibres in these fixed access networks is mandatory for network operators. Starting from the fibre to the exchange (FTTEx) architecture, there are different network architectures, which bring the optical fibre path nearer to the subscriber: Hybrid fibre-copper architectures like fibre to the cabinet (FTTCab) and fibre to the building (FTTB) are used and the target solution is a fibre to the home (FTTH) access network. Another hybrid fixed access network solution is the hybrid fibre coax (HFC) network provided by cable network operators.
