Inhalt:
This paper presents a novel analytical approach that unifies the calculation of the outage capacity achieved in the downlink and uplink of a site diversity system operating under rain fades at the Ku frequency band and above. More specifically, the downlink diversity scenario is interpreted as a SIMO broadband satellite channel configuration whereas the uplink as a MISO one. At these high frequencies, since multipath is insignificant, in order to exploit the MIMO principle, the spatial channel benefits arising from the rainfall spatial inhomogeneity are more relevant. Focus is put on short-distance (micro-scale) site diversity geometries due to their practicality. Analytical closed form expressions for the outage capacity achieved in the SIMO and MISO cases are derived, which are validated through extended numerical results.
