Power converters must provide system services when it comes to replacement of synchronous machines and expansion of the AC grid with static generation. Voltage and frequency stability have to be ensured. This paper describes fundamental phenomena, tasks and possible solutions. One important result is: rotating generation can be replaced by static generation without endangering frequency stability. Currently less attention is being paid to voltage stability in connection with the use of voltage sourced converters. This has primarily to do with the flexibility and controllability of this converter type. However, one has to be careful. Also the voltage sourced converter can cause voltage instability at unfavourable network conditions. Conclusion: smart grids need smart systems engineering.
