This paper gives an overview of the envisaged/planned second generation of TerraSAR-X. This comprises an introduction to the German SAR program, the results of the TerraSAR-X2 implementation study and how possible mission scenarios might look like. The required technological progress of the new SAR system involves both the radar electronics and the SAR front-end and changes to the Ground Segment are summarized. Also two possible secondary payloads, space borne AIS (Automatic Identification System) and TIR (Thermal Infra Red) are discussed. Finally the benefits for existing TerraSAR-X applications are highlighted.
