We developed an 80-kWh-class telecommunications backup system using 95-Ah large-scale nickel metal hydride batteries. The system consists of 20 series circuits in parallel, where one circuit has 40 nickel metal hydride cells, chargers, dischargers, and an electronic control unit, which monitors and controls the system and reports the status of the batteries and errors to the monitoring sites. A simultaneous charge of all batteries and a constant-power discharge was included in the design for stability.
