Accelerometers and Gyroscopes are becoming more relevant in modern cars due to increasing ESC take rates, with a trend of becoming series equipment. Additional premium features and options are requiring higher performance from the very same sensors. This article should show opportunities to close the gap in between technical trends for inertial sensors and dedicated requirements for different automotive applications, leading to cascade building block structures for the applications. Beside the description of technological inertial sensor trends, the question of useful sensor fusion should be answered. VTI Technologies has a leading position in development and production of intertial sensors for ESC and drive dynamic as well as associated automotive safety applications.
