400V DC distribution systems (see Note below) bring many advantages to datacentres power architecture; therefore they are becoming the preferred choice for new installations or facility upgrades. While equipment (servers, switches, routers) accepting 380V directly become increasingly available, there is the immediate need to power loads that cannot accept the higher voltage, specifically: ? Existing 48V telecom equipment (typically higher per-unit power): this category includes mature designs as well as existing rack-mount devices still within their deployment cycle and usable life. ? Standardized, open-design 12V and 24V equipment (typically lower per-unit power): this category includes systems designed under open-source initiatives like ‘open compute’ server designs (which are based on a 12V supply) and DC micro-grids initiatives like the SELV distribution of locally generated power within ‘green buildings’ (EMERGE alliance 24V DC lighting as an example). This paper presents the analysis and architectural design of power electronic adapters that achieve the above objective.
