The changing needs of data center developers and operators combined with the explosion in cloud computing is driving the demand for high density storage and secure online operations. There are more than half a million data centers in existence today. All together they suffer 2.8 million hours of downtime each year at a cost of $426 billion. Implementing a High power UPS reduces this downtime and significantly reduces downtime cost. For energy storage, a high power Li-ion (lithium ion) battery system is considered as an efficient alternative solution to the existing lead-acid batteries. This paper outlines the specific benefits of Li-ion technology used in data centers UPS’s. It follows with a description of a new modular system designed for installation in a stand-alone 19’’ rack-mountable format. The performance of the system is summarized and system configurations are presented to meet the load demands of a data center UPS. The design approach concerning safety is discussed.
