Having caused some initial confusion, different voice solutions are now settled and supported in deployed LTE systems. The currently most widely used option is Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB) utilizing fallback to, and voice call setup in a legacy technology such as UMTS or GSM. Voice over IP over LTE (VoLTE) is the LTE “intrinsic” packet-switched solution. This approach is based on the so-called IMS (IP Multi-media Subsystem) core and an appropriate VoIP client on the user devices. Beside these two main solutions for voice services in LTE, Simultaneous Voice and LTE data (SVLTE) has been used since the early days of LTE, requiring a dual radio frequency (RF) front-end in the user device. This solution allows concurrent registration and support of data in LTE and voice in a legacy technology (CDMA, UMTS, GSM).
