Based on the double-coil actuator ironless PM synchronous machines can be designed. Compared to conventional PM synchronous machines iron losses are avoided and cogging torque can be neglected. The concept of PM synchronous machines with air coil windings will be introduced. The analytical and numerical modeling of the steady-state behavior will be presented. The measured steady-state behavior by using manufactured prototypes is compared to the results of simulations.
