New types of robots and new fields of application are setting more demanding requirements for the actuation and sensing technologies that form the basis of all robotic devices. Sensor technology, in particular, is playing an ever more important role in shaping the nature of new robots and also the places and environments where robots are to be found. Magnetic sensors, based on the magnetoresistive (MR) effect, are particularly compact, precise and robust, and offer the robot designer more degrees of freedom with respect to the design of robot joints. Furthermore, MR sensors open up new measurement possibilities with the perspective to significantly improve the performance of robots, in terms of positioning accuracy and dynamic characteristics. This paper describes some basics of MR sensor technology and the benefits, as well as describing a number of practical application examples, where MR sensor technology has helped in the realization of new types of robot.
