Discrete Multitone Transmission in the Presence of Optical Noise, Chromatic Dispersion and Narrow-band Optical Filtering

The use of bit and power loading algorithms in combination with direct-detection discrete multitone (DMT) modulation enables high data rate transmission with a low-complexity transmitter and receiver setup. We show that the available bandwidth of current high-speed digital-to-analog-converters allows the transmission of 56 Gb/s data within the 1.55micrometer window over up to 200 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without optical dispersion compensation. By introducing asymmetrical filtering of the DMT signal, the bandwidth requirement can be reduced to below 36 GHz, which will allow the multiplexing of 56-Gb/s channels within a 50-GHz channel grid. Moreover, tight asymmetrical filtering increases the performance compared to wide symmetrical filtering, so that the reach could be extended beyond the 200 km shown within this paper.
