In active (SAR) and passive (radiometer) microwave remote sensing polarimetry provides an innovative observation space for analyses of land surface scattering pointing towards a combined (active-passive) soil moisture estimation on agricultural ground. In order to investigate the potential of a polarimetric, active-passive approach for soil moisture estimation, a unique data set was acquired at L-band by DLR’s airborne platform in 2013 over the TERENO Rur observatory, Germany. The F-SAR sensor was operated together with the PLMR2 (radiometer) in a multi-sensor configuration to acquire an active-passive microwave data set in high spatial resolution. First investigations show encouraging potential. However, results concerning combined polarimetric scattering analyses towards a polarimetric, active-passive soil moisture estimation will be presented in the final paper.
