This paper presents the Sentinel-1 Level2 Doppler algorithm and its performance, and demonstrate new and innovative use of the Doppler product. The analysis is performed using ASAR SM data acquired in different swaths over coastal ocean, sea ice and rain forest areas. The performance is evaluated in terms of the achieved doppler standard deviation, and the ability to compensate for side-band errors. Over homogenous ocean areas acquired in swath S2 and S3 a Doppler standard deviation between 2.49 Hz and 2.89 Hz is achieved at a spatial resolution of 2 x 2 km2. Over mixed coastal scene acquired in swath S4 the achieved standard deviation is 3.81 Hz.This gives an accuracy in the corresponding radial velocity projected on the ocean surface of less than 0.2 m/s. Over rain forest area acquired in swath S5 the Doppler standard deviation achieved is around 2.55 Hz. The impact of side-band correction on the Doppler centroid frequency depends on the radar pulse repetition frequency (PRF) used, and is thus swath dependent. For a typical ASAR coastal ocean scene acquired in swath S4, the impact is observed to be up to 60 Hz close to the coastline. Measurement of sea ice drift velocity using Doppler frequency is demonstrated, and sea ice drift up to 0.6 m/s is observed from ASAR SM data acquired over Fram Strait.
