A Mobile Wi-Fi device can access the Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) network and provide Wi-Fi connectivity to mobile phones and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices. In this paper, the use of mobile Wi-Fi device to address a challenging new problem of the tremendous expected growth of M2M traffic in future mobile networks is proposed. By modifying the design of mobile Wi-Fi architecture, the challenges of integrating M2M traffic into LTE-A can be efficiently tackled. The proposed scheme utilizes the mobile Wi-Fi device as a data packet aggregating and multiplexing node for efficient utilization of scarce radio resources. According to our research, the proposed idea is novel and has not been proposed by others for mobile Wi-Fi based M2M communications. This can give mobile Wi-Fi devices more longevity and value.
