Inhalt:
This paper provides a detailed analysis of the number of connected cars in Germany from 2009 to 2018. Within that, it explores the actual take-up of specific connected functionalities by consumers and draws conclusions as regards strategic implications for telecommunications providers, automotive manufacturers and network planners. It finds that in 2015 4.6m connected cars were on German roads and that this number is likely to increase to more than 9m by 2018. While connected navigation is identified as the main functionality in connected cars, entertainment and in-car WiFi options resonate less positively with consumers. In sum, the findings presented here cast some doubts over the actual potential for automotive manufacturers to establish the car as new connected platform in light of the strong position that smartphone manufacturers have already assumed.
