With the increasing acceptance of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) technologies, Network Operators are modifying their traditional network infrastructures in order to provide more flexibility in enabling new business opportunities. One major change introduced by those technologies is the capability of deploying on demand different network topologies on top of the same physical infrastructure. This new concept, known as network slicing, can be realized by segmenting the physical resources based on the requirements of the application level. However individual QoS requirements of multiple network services running on the same physical infrastructure cannot be guaranteed concurrently. We propose an extension to the NFV and SDN architecture for supporting this functionality. This article introduces the concept of network slicing as dynamic allocation of network resources (like bandwidth) based on the requirements of the network services. Furthermore, the concept is exemplified as an addition to the current Cloud architecture and evaluated on a testbed architecture based on the Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin open source Open Baton toolkit. The results of our measurements demonstrate that our solution is suitable for early prototyping of network slicing.
