The energy transition with fluctuating renewable generation and new, controllable consumption devices requires new methods and technologies for distribution grid operators to manage energy flows and grid assets. For this, it is also important to transfer R&D projects and insights to (suitable) elements in the toolbox of grid operators which can be used for specific challenges. One example for such a transfer is the “Smart Operator”. This device and the underlying components have been developed with diverse and complex features. For an efficient usage in distribution grids, a downsizing is required to realize a cheap and effective usage in grids. This is given with the “grid screening feature” whereby energy flows in the low voltage system are calculated and visualized for the staff of grid planning and operation to dissolve the “black box” of low voltage grids. The usage is evaluated in 13 low voltage grids of Westnetz.
