Power system operation relies on three main parts: Observation, Analysis and Control. This paper focuses on the first two parts. Recent trends show, that more and more transmission system operators (TSOs) implement wide area monitoring system (WAMS), for being able to observe the power system dynamics in real time. WAMS systems are based on PMU measurements which are standardized with the IEEE C37.118 standard. Compared to normal SCADA measurements with a reporting rate of 1 per 3-5 seconds, the WAMS systems have reporting rates of 50-60Hz. This means the incoming data stream needs to be analyzed fully automatically. Currently most installed WAMS applications are used for faster post mortem analysis. However, PMU data is much more valuable for real time analyses then just ending up in a big archive. This paper introduces a multi step approach to optimize the WAMS system settings to provide early warnings to the operators.
