Traditionally, product-developing companies have relied heavily on acceptance testing as part of the development cycle, especially in mechanical and electronic designs. However, there are many cases where this acceptance testing is inefficient in revealing potential design weaknesses that may cause the products to fail in the market. Many examples support this, at great costs to the involved companies and their customers. The design weaknesses may be the result of design glitches, or they may come from lack of knowledge about the actual loads the products will see in use, unexpected use patterns etc. This paper suggests a viable way of ensuring product reliability, as developed and refined during some years of practical use. Test in development is a key part of the development project taking up much time and resources. Therefore, it is helpful to see testing as an integral part of the quality strategy of the development project. Among other initiatives, a mature quality strategy prescribes reliability risk management and early test efforts in the development cycle. This means exploratory testing, especially robustness testing, often at more than one assembly level. This paper explains test philosophy in some detail, and gives a few practical guidelines. Several examples illustrate these test methods and their results.
