Volume decorrelation in interferometric SAR (InSAR) data over glaciers and ice sheets is driven by the vertical structure of the subsurface. Previous studies have shown that dominant scattering layers in the percolation zone of Greenland have to be taken into account for InSAR coherence modelling, but also that the modelling of the volume component needs to be improved. This study employs multi-baseline InSAR methods to identify and attenuate dominant scattering layers in order to access the volume-only component. The quality of the volume estimation depends on the accuracy of the estimated layer positions and powers. First results indicate that the assumption of a constant extinction volume is inappropriate or needs adjustment to describe the data from an airborne SAR campaign.
