During the last 10 years we have seen a growth of the use of Spaceborne SAR sensors and applications. The growth in operational and commercial applications has been distinct in the categories of large area surveillance (maritime: ship and ice monitoring) as well as monitoring of small land areas such as for defence, oil & gas and mining. In order to take advantage of relevant land change detection applications of SAR it seems apparent that future SAR sensors should in-clude modes that combine high resolution and wide swath coverage. High resolution (e.g. 5 m or better) enables rele-vant information extraction of interest to operational users. The wide swath is required to build consistent regional and world-wide archives that can be used for powerful (exactly repeated) change detection applications. This paper will summarize the context and benefits of large area land surveillance (change detection) using high-resolution spaceborne SAR and the distinct advantages as a useful tool in the context of operational earth observation requirements. The requirements will be illustrated using a number of examples based on RADARSAT-2 SAR archives and new collections. We include discussion items for future missions including the concept of common orbit geometry for various systems.
