This paper investigates the possibilities integrating RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) into robotics. In industrial automation, RFID transponders can be applied to tools and workpieces. Moreover, for the identification of objects, it is also possible to store information locally on the object. This kind of object may be interpreted as an intelligent object because it supports the decentralization of decisions, which is important in the context of the term Industry 4.0. The paper gives proposals as to what kinds of data can be stored in workpieces and how this information can be used to optimize the robot’s task. RFID also gives the possibility to localize the objects. An according scenario is also presented in this paper.
