This paper summarizes the experiences from the past project phase of the National 5G Energy Hub (N5GEH). In this context the necessity, limitations and benefits of massive sensor and actuator integration through radio-based communication networks in thermal and electrical distribution systems is discussed. The paper introduces the architecture of communication systems with focus on Germany in the domains of building, electrical system operation and metering infrastructure including cloud-based architecture used within the N5GEH project. Hence, cooperation of smart meter gateway and cloud-based platforms is examined on the example of the comprehensive building management. Furthermore, this paper classifies relevant smart grid and smart building use cases, such as the regional virtual power plant (RVPP). Finally, 5G performance test utilizing energy protocols such as IEC 60870-5-104 and MQTT were performed in an Ericsson laboratory.
