The Alternating Current (AC) transmission systems are typically underutilized in terms of a balanced load distribution at any time and any point in the grid, if using the traditional approach of planning and operation. It contains dynamic problems with establishing generous stability margins because there are no possible control units in the network, especially in situations with high dynamics. However, current environmental and eco-nomic issues emphasize the necessity to utilize existing transmission assets to their maximum extent possible. Therefore, Siemens Energy focused and started the development of UPFC PLUS as a dynamic and intelligent grid ‘debottlenecking device’ to serve its purpose by dynamic load flow management in the network. The UPFC PLUS is connected in an existing AC transmission line and is aimed to control active load flow as well as to provide coordinated reactive power compensation.
