Fast Approximation of WDM Bitrate Maximization based on Gaussian Noise Model

Nowadays technology allows modulating optical signals with a wide range of parameters such as symbol rate, bit rate, and modulation format. The optimum choice of these parameters depends on the transmission scenario and the number of WDM channels. In this paper, we introduce an optimization method, which finds the channel power and optimum modulation format for each individual channel maximizing the total aggregated bit rate over a given link. We present results using this method for point-to-point links with varying number of spans and fiber types.
