Autonomy is one of the hot topics in many technology areas. Public transport systems such as the metro in Paris are already fully autonomous, autonomous taxis are starting to operate commercially in several cities, etc. On the other hand, there are still technology areas which have no or little autonomy implemented. One of these is the power system, where automation for time critical operation like protection are implemented, but autonomy is not in the scope of operation. This paper shows the opportunities which came along with a certain degree of autonomy in areas such as the management of flexibility assets (BESS, electric vehicles, etc.) or electricity markets. However, it also discusses the risks that would arise from the introduction of autonomy in the field of critical infrastructure.
