Real-time simulators enable the integration of real equipment into a simulated power system and thus form the interface between simulation and experiment. A distinction is made between (Control) Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHiL) for secondary technology and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHiL) for primary technology. In the area of real-time simulation, the laboratory concept follows a multi-vendor and multi-domain approach, in which the various simulators take on specific tasks. The coupling between the real-time simulators and from the simulators to the power converters, which are located more than 200 m away, is achieved by means of the Aurora communication protocol via fiber optic lines. In addition, the VillasNode Co-simulation framework allows external simulators to be coupled, which enables a geographically distributed laboratory structure, for example across Germany.
