This paper presents two concepts for the execution of automated distribution network expansion planning with an optimization by a genetic algorithm. In the first concept, the optimization is performed for the two investigated operating points in each support year. In the second concept, only the two operating points of the end year are examined and optimized. Afterward, the results are compared with the previous support years in order to determine the timing of the required planning measures retrospectively. The aim of this paper is to present the differences in planning results and to investigate the required computing time. It will be determined under which aspects which concept should be used. The results show that the second concept requires less computing time but both concepts can be used. Depending on the consideration of various aspects (minimal trench or line length, minimal costs, citizen acceptance, resource conservation) of the planning results, a decision should be made in favor of one of the concepts.
