Power electronic semiconductor switches are now getting closer to ideal switches. However, the generally expected reductions in converter sizes with increasing frequency have stalled. Reasons can be found mainly in inductive devices. There, both magnetic material properties and conduction characteristics at high frequencies are responsible. The article analyzes the elementary causes and offers possible solutions for further increasing the power density by increasing the frequency with WBG semiconductor switches.
