This paper describes the electromagnetic and thermal design of a permanent magnet synchronous motor for use as a traction motor in electrified medium and heavy-duty vehicles. To increase the continuous and peak torque density of this electric motor a new, innovative cooling concept is shown. That will allow a continuous to peak power ratio of more than 93 % and results in a continuous power density of approximately 50 kW/l without being a high-speed motor. To develop this kind of electric motor the requirements are derived from the VECTO2 long haul cycle for a standard 40-tons longhaul (LH) truck (European Vehicle Group 5,5-LH)1. The electromagnetic and thermal simulation is shown and afterwards compared to the measurement of this motor. These measurements show that the motor is a Superior Continuous Torque (SCT) motor.
