Support of quality of service (QoS) is a basic requirement for future wireless systems. To comply with this evolution the standard IEEE 802.11e has been specified that intends to enhance the current 802.11 MAC to expand support for applications with QoS requirements, and in the capabilities and efficiency of the protocol. However, it will be demonstrated that the current proposal for the distributed coordination function (DCF) has some weaknesses. For that reason in this paper a novel access scheme for IEEE 802.11 DCF is proposed that guarantees QoS. Based on simple energy signals the priority for the access on the shared medium is managed in a distributed manner. By means of analytical formulas the throughput performance of the new scheme is derived and compared with IEEE 802.11e. Results indicate that the new scheme provides impressive performance gains.
