Presently dormant mode operation is uniformly supported when a mobile node roams in one of the 3G cellular networks (UMTS or CDMA2000) and in wireless local area networks. We propose new procedures to support dormant mode operation extended with Mobile IP to preserve sessions when a mobile node with multiple interfaces hands over to WLAN/UMTS/CDMA2000 network. Our technique is based on using a fast address configuration algorithm in WLAN and letting the access router of WLAN and GGSN/ DSN of UMTS and CDMA2000 to perform necessary proxy registration functions in lieue of the mobile. We analytically compare nonfast and fast address configuration. Savings in the wireless bandwidth for proxy registrations are also established analytically.
