Deployment of IP-based ubiquitous services in the real word should affect the network backbone in the sense of increased traffic intensity and demand to fulfill heterogeneous QoS requirements. For that purpose, in this paper, approaches to efficient traffic engineering in the DiffServ-aware network environment have been proposed, considering only slight modifications of the existing routing protocols. The proposed approaches rely on dynamic adaptation of multiple link costs, each expressed as a suitable function of the single general performance metric. Traffic engineering is considered as a process coupled with the network management system, extended to support QoS management functionality. The evaluation of proposed approaches through simulation confirmed benefits in the sense of efficiency and scalability.
