Inhalt:
A Fuel cell converts the energy contained in fuel into electricity and heat by means of an electro chemical reaction. This was originally discovered in 1839 by Sir William Grove. Up to now applications of fuel cell technology has been successful in niche markets. Before a new technology like fuel cells can be introduced into a wider market, a detailed and extensive demonstration and product validation program needs to be completed. Within the demonstration programme a safe and reliable means of power generation has to be proved. Economic considerations must have second priority through this phase of proving the technology concept. Siemens is now entering the pre-commercial phase of SOFC market introduction. We are working in collaboration with innovative customers testing demonstration fuel cells under real operation conditions. The manufacturer of fuel cells can benefit from the operating experience to further improve and simplify the system to obtain an economic product. The characteristics of the SOFC is ideally suited to provide power for telecommunication applications. The test and demonstration phase provides a basis for providing the technology and the reliability required for any commercial operation. Based on this know how the timescale can be established for the introduction to the broader market of SOFC technology to distributed power generation on an economic basis.
