During the last decade, considerable developments in the usability as well as in the efficiency of commercially available electromagnetic simulation software packages have emerged. At the same time, affordable computational resources have improved significantly enabling simulation analyses of detailed and complex electromagnetic structures. Due to these advances the exploitation of simulations in the modern mobile phone antenna design process has become a part of daily routines. One of the major developments in the simulation software packages is the possibility to import and export mechanical computer-aided design (CAD)-based models, offering a direct port between electromagnetic and mechanical design environments. This is especially useful in mobile phone antenna design since, as the antenna performance depends strongly on the structure of the rest of the phone, exploiting the mechanical model of the phone in the antenna simulations shortens the antenna design cycle and also improves the accuracy and also the reliability of the simulation results.
