A novel method for automatic spot detection based on the Wavelet Transform (WT) has been recently presented and it has been extensively used for automatic ship detection in SAR images. The results obtained point out the potential of the use of a multiresolution time-frequency framework for the analysis of SAR imagery. The first part of this paper will be devoted to review some improvements introduced to the first version of the algorithm (in particular, the resolution is now preserved). Afterwards, results on ENVISAT and RADARSAT imagery will be presented and evaluated. Finally, the benefits of the availability of light polarimetric data for ship detection purposes will be discussed.
