In today's environment, the military network is the backbone of the operation. Recent advances in sensor fabrication technology, lowpower digital and analogue electronics, and lowpower wireless communication systems have made it possible to develop low-cost, robust and survivable tactical wireless sensor networks. A military sensor network is the link that connects mobile tactical nodes to a large amount of critical information located in the Tactical Operation Center or the Sensor Management Co-Ordination Center (SMCOC), every day, anytime. In today's sophisticated and competitive military wireless environment, the control of the energy consumption in a tactical wireless sensor network is very crucial for connectivity, QoS and survivability of tactical communication. In this paper we study the power control mechanisms in wireless ad-hoc sensor networks, the factors that influence the power control algorithm’s selection and we investigate the way theses schemes may be applied in the demanding tactical wireless battlefield.
