Providing diverse broadband services economically every time, even to mobile subscribers will be a major challenge for the telecommunication community. Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is a radio access technology to provide ubiquitous broadband access with performances similar to wired xDSL systems, which surpass current 3G mobile data rates. This paper describes the most promising BWA candidate, IEEE 802.16, better known as WiMAX, and its latest amendment IEEE 802.16e which expands the standard to allow mobile subscriber station. The IEEE 802.16 system is introduced and MAC and PHY layer functionality supporting mobile operation is described. Especially, the handover procedures are introduced. The paper shows that the enhanced IEEE 802.16e system has the capability to fulfill the requirements regarding the mobility management of future telecommunication systems.
