Hybrid powertrains in HEV vehicles are used in a variety of operating ranges. The electric drive component within the hybrid powertrain is usually dimensioned to meet fuel economy, emission and performance targets. Depending on the dimensioning of the electric drive, the benefits for abovementioned attributes can change dramatically and may even be negative. In this paper, the influence of the electric drive's maximum power, its maximum torque, its efficiency and its rotational inertia is shown, including typical load duty cycles for real world driving cycles.
